Transport for Greater Manchester’s Head of Metrolink, Danny Vaughan, said: “Today’s engineering works are essential for the successful completion of the Metrolink Trafford Park Line Extension.
“These works need 54 hours to complete and so unfortunately, they can’t be done overnight.
“We only have a very short window to complete them to ensure the Trafford Park Line opens on time next year. As Greater Manchester has so many fantastic events, unfortunately there is no good weekend to carry out the works and I’d like to apologise to anyone whose journey has been affected today.
"Next weekend we expect to have over 30,000 people travelling by tram to see Manchester United play at home and thousands of people from across Greater Manchester will also be lining the streets as we welcome Tour of Britain for the first time.
“We expect around 5,000 people to travel to and from Old Trafford today by public transport and we have worked closely with partners on alternative arrangements to get people where they need to go to as smoothly as possible. This includes both dedicated shuttle buses to the cricket from Piccadilly and replacement buses for other stops on the Metrolink line.”
